Belief
Desiree Marchand
A man walked up to a woman who was sitting on a bench. He sat down next to her and asked her, “Do you believe?”
She furrowed her eyebrows, “Believe in what?” She asked.
He stared back at her blankly, but instead of answering he repeated his question, “Do you believe?”
“Yes,” she replied, “I believe in humanity. I believe in myself. I believe in kindness. I believe in love. I believe in responsibility. I believe in hope. I believe in the wind even though I cannot see it because I can feel it. I believe if you can give back to the community you should. I believe that you can be your own teacher. I believe that knowledge is important. I believe that everyone from every walk of life should be treated fairly. I believe that truth is just a matter of perspective. I believe that individuals are multifaceted and complicated. I believe that you can never truly understand another person. I believe in morality. I believe in trying your best at everything you do.”
“All right,” the man said, “but do you believe?”
“I believe in many things,” the woman answered. “Just not God.”
